For many brides-to-be, finding the perfect gown is the icing on the (wedding) cake, so to speak. But not so fast! We spoke with Darcy Miller, Editor-in-Chief of Martha Stewart Weddings, who gave three tips on steps to take before you buy the dress, to ensure the wheels don't come off its train before you walk down the aisle!

Decide on a Date and Place
Definitely don't go shopping 'til you have your date and a place. I've worked with enough brides who run out and go to Vera Wang and buy something with a long cathedral train and end up having their wedding on the beach somewhere. Then they have to sell their dress on eBay and buy a second Vera Wang dress!

Stick to Your Budget
Don't even go into stores that are way over your budget. It won't be productive. Don't waste your time or a consultant's time.

Do Your Research
Before you go shopping it's helpful for you to look around because a lot of bridal stores, like Kleinfeld's or Mark Ingram don't let you look at all the dresses. You describe your wedding and they pull things for you. So maybe you say, 'I want something grand!' Well, for you what is grand in your head might not be what a consultant thinks is grand. The more things you can bring, like tear outs and pieces of inspiration, will help you. There are billions of dresses out there, so it makes the shopping process a little bit easier if you have a better idea of what you are looking for.
