Manly Rom-Coms
Avoid a fight, and watch a movie that you'll both love.
During the winter, women want to snuggle up with a good romantic comedy causing most men to moan, roll their eyes and feign sickness in order to avoid sitting through a love-infused flick. But as many men know, rather than refusing outright, it's best to compromise in order to avoid a rip-roaring, tear down fight. So we thought we’d help you along: Instead of “No way am I seeing that chick flick,” go with, “Why not cuddle up and rent a rom-come we both like." There are tons of points to be had if you choose this direction but alas, we know a good romantic comedy is not on your Net Flix list. So here are our top ten a guy AND girl are sure to enjoy!
Manhattan,1979
For a guy, the key to a great rom-com is a leading man he can identify with. Forget the Brad “can get any girl he wants” Pitt! The nebbish, but relatable Woody Allen plays a 42 year old man with dating dilemmas. Of course he starts off by seeing a 17-year-old girl in this scenic classic which may creep you out. If so, try another Allen classic, Annie Hall.
When Harry Met Sally, 1989
This Billy Crystal/Meg Ryan flick is fantastic because of the brilliant writing of Nora Ephron. Most memorable and worthy of causing confusion for men everywhere is the famous deli scene where Meg Ryan fakes an orgasm. Worth watching.
Something About Mary, 1998
The Farrelly brothers' flick is great for guys for one reason and one reason only: its gross humor. We’re talking fart jokes, dead dogs, zipper tricks and of course Cameron Diaz’s hilariously disgusting “hair gel” all with a little love story mixed in there.
High Fidelity, 2000
Sure, John Cusack appeared in the ladies-only-love Serendipity, but he also starred in this record store set movie about a guy who’s dumped and seeks out his exes to see what he’s doing wrong. While guys will love the soundtrack, girls will love that the leading man admits he has a problem!
Meet the Parents, 2000
A Ben Stiller flick that is so funny, you’ll forget there’s a love story at all. The characters name alone – Gaylord Focker, makes us chuckle, and of course Robert De Niro is equally hilarious.
Wedding Crashers, 2005
A movie mostly based on two bachelors played by Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson who try to get girls in bed by crashing weddings. You can’t go wrong! Of course, there is a love story, but it definitely plays second fiddle to the laughs by Vaughn, Wilson and Will Farrell, whose character crashes funerals as well.
The 40 Year Old Virgin 2005
The king of comedy, Judd Apatow created this hysterical movie about a neurotic, but well-meaning virgin played by Steve Carrell. Virgin or not, any guy who’s ever struggled with girls will relate and while Carrell is great, the supporting cast made up of Paul Rudd, Seth Rogan and Romany Malco make the movie.
Knocked Up 2007
Judd Apatow does it again! This movie is very funny, kinda’ dirty, and great for goofy underdogseverywhere who hope to get the hottie. Disclaimer: As the title would suggest, a baby IS born which may NOT put you in the mood, but who knows, your girl may have other things in mind.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall 2008
Another dopey guy/hot girl movie – we actually see Kristen Bell (who spends much of the move in a bikini) leave Jason Segal for rock star Russell. Brand. Of course Segal finds a friend in the equally-sexy Mila Kunis, and naturally both girls want the slightly overweight, not-so-handsome dude at the end. Guys can dream, can’t they?
Vicky Cristina Barcelona 2008
An Oscar nominated film with subtitles? Your thinking, no thanks! But what if we told you it includes a scene in which Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johannsen kiss? Well now you're talking. Your girl with love this movie, and so will you. Less funny, more sexy, but a must-see.
