Although Greek food is considered one of the healthiest cuisines, there are some options that are better than others. iMag went to registered dietitian, Tanya Zuckerbrot of Skinny in the City to help us navigate the Mediterranean menu. 

Greek Food Calorie Comparison:

Note: nutritional information based on one serving

Appetizers:

Traditional Dish: White Pita Bread, 180 calories, 1 gram of fiber

Healthy Option: Whole-Wheat Pita Bread, 180 calories, 5 grams of fiber

Healthier Option: Sliced Veggies, 100 calories

Dip:

Traditional Dish: 1/2 Cup of Hummus, 500 calories

Healthy Option: Two Tablespoons of Hummus, 50 calories

Salads:

Traditional Dish: Greek Salad, 600 calories, 30 grams of fat

Healthier Option: Grilled Calamari or Grilled Shrimp Salad, 35 calories an ounce

Main Dishes:

Traditional Dish: Lamb Meatballs, 500 calories and 50 grams of fat

Traditional Dish: Spinach Pie, 600 calories and 30 grams of fat

Tip: Split these traditional dishes with the table to cut out calories. 

Healthy Option: Sea Bass, 100 calories 

Sides:

Healthy Option: Steamed Spinach with Lemon juice and Olive Oil, 100 calories 

Drinks:

Healthy Option: Glass of Wine, 80 calories

Healthier Option: Herbal Tea, 0 calories

Desserts:

Traditional Dish: Baklava, 400 calories and 20 grams of fat

Dried Fruit: 100 calories per serving
