VIDEO: A Beautiful Valentine's Day-Inspired Room

When we think of Valentine’s Day, we often think of our date-night outfits, or what we’ll give to our significant other. But what about V-Day décor for your home?
We sat down with Interior Designer James Rixner, who designed a room inspired by February 14th for the Holiday House NYC. Rixner was one of 26 interior designers who built rooms based on different holidays. The house was open to the public in November and December of 2011, with proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
“It’s a beautiful room,” he said. “When people walk into the room, I want them to be taken by the architecture and what I’ve done with it to really showcase it and highlight it.”
Rixner painted the paneled French walls a chocolate brown with cream trim for the molding. He adorned the windows with custom drapes in three different colors of crème to complement the carpet, which he says inspired the entire design.
“The inspiration for the room came from this incredible carpet,” he said. “The heart-shaped images on the swirls of the rug really came to mind when I picked the rug.”
Rixner included a table set for a romantic evening, complete with a creative bouquet of roses, orchids, poppies, amaryllis and greenery. “I think that if you mix roses with other things it becomes less of a cliché.”
And speaking of clichés, Rixner’s room is void of any sort of typical Valentine’s Day garb; he chose to focus instead, on why everyone truly loves the holiday: “No red hearts,” he said, “It’s all about chocolate.”
