Look outside: The leaves are falling and there's that crisp chill in the air, which means hot chocolate and bulky sweaters are around the corner. So it's time to put away the sandals and take out the snow boots! Sad as it is, it doesn't have to be a chore if you stay organized. We went to the matriarch of clean, Mrs. Meyer, for her tips on storing your summer items for an easy transition into fall.

Clothing
Mrs. Meyer suggests designated a storage space in your home for off season odds and ends. "I have a closet upstairs where I put all my clothes and shoes that I'm not wearing."

You'll want to put your clothes away in a condition so they'll be ready to wear when you take them out next season. "Make sure all of it is washed and ironed if necessary," she says. "If you don't iron your clothes and then leave them for a season, the wrinkles will become imprinted on your garments."

In terms of children's clothing, create a storage space for each child, so you'll know where you put everything come spring. "When the kids were little, I had lots of big drawers," she says. "But even with eight kids, they didn't have many clothes. Kids have so many clothes now!"

To avoid clutter, Mrs. Meyer says to get rid of any of the clothes you no longer wear. "You can give your clothing to Goodwill, St Vincent de Paul or the DAV will come pick it up for you."

Lawn Furniture
Keep your furniture in a dry place, probably the garage or the basement, if its safe from flooding. Before you move them inside, you should shake them out and give them a thorough cleaning. "With your patio furniture and cushions, make sure you vacuum them out before you store them," she says. "Any kind of crumbs could attract moths, which will ruin the fabric."
