How to Decorate for Thanksgiving Without Using Turkeys
At the Holiday House NYC, Felicia Zwebner shares how to create a cozy Thanksgiving look for your home.
There’s no better place to spend the holidays than at home. But a close second is the Holiday House, an annual decorator’s show house that benefits the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
In its fourth year, the Holiday House – a residence on Manhattan’s Upper East Side – features gorgeous rooms decorated by top designers from around the country. Each room is inspired by a different holiday throughout the year.
For anyone in the New York area who loves beautiful things, the Holiday House is a must-see (for a good cause).
Felicia Zwebner designed her room after Thanksgiving. “When I think of Thanksgiving, I think of family,” she says. “It’s one of my favorite seasons; I happen to love the fall. I feel like God is working his artistry across the landscape.”
Zwebner took a dark, wood-paneled room and transformed it into a light, open space conducive for entertaining. “Usually when people think of Thanksgiving they have one long, rectangular table,” she says. “What I find is the conversation usually ends up being limited to the person you’re sitting across from. So I have two smaller tables where most people around the table can talk to each other and engage in conversation.”

Takeaway Tips:
Creative Napkin Holders
Zwebner put pheasant feathers in each napkin ring to match the pheasant plates she chose for the table setting.
Festive Fireplace
Instead of birch logs, choose something more autumnal, like cattails and wheat, or whatever is indigenous to where you live.
Make Conversation Easier
Round tables make it easier for your guests to engage with more people. If you don’t have round tables, make sure you have ample seating where people will congregate before and after the meal.
Happy Thanksgiving!
