Eliminating gluten from your diet has been associated with many health benefits including weight loss, but for some it’s about more than looking to get fit. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley that can actually cause patients diagnosed with celiac disease and gluten sensitivity to become very ill.
It is crucial for these patients to avoid ingesting gluten altogether or they could be subject to a range of symptoms including bloating, stomach pain, diarrhea, joint aches, neuropathy and as many as 200 other issues.

Dear Dr. Manny,
I have gluten sensitivity and although I do my best to avoid it sometimes I inadvertently eat some. Is there any way to flush it out of my system quick so I don’t get the symptoms?
Unfortunately, there are some occasions when gluten-free options may not be available and there is always the possibility of cross-contamination which could cause illness. While there is no cure-all script, expert Beth Hillson, author of “Living Well Gluten Free,” offered some tips on how to handle symptoms and speed up the digestive process on these occasions.
“Take a Tylenol if you have a headache or achy joints, an antacid if you have heartburn or a nap if you’re lethargic,” Hillson told FoxNews.com. “Digestive enzymes, lots of water and moderate exercise can also help speed up digestion and avoid spicy foods and alcohol. Stick with comfort foods like chicken soup and warm tea.”
Hillson also said it’s important to remember that the symptoms will eventually pass.
