Muscle spasms are very common and can occur in almost every part of your body.
We recently received this email from a concerned viewer:
Dear Dr. Manny,
I've been getting this weird eye twitch that lasts for a few days at a time. What's the deal?
Thanks,
Dianne in Kentucky
Well Dianne, the twitching you feel is actually the involuntary movement of the muscles around your eye – called a spasm.
Muscle spasms can come on suddenly and last for days, weeks, or even months. The good news is, while a twitching eye can be annoying, it’s often harmless.
Some common causes can include:
- Drinking alcohol or caffeine
- Fatigue
- Irritation of the surface or inner eyelid
- Physical exertion
- Smoking
- Stress
Occasionally, a twitching eye can be an early sign of a chronic movement disorder. If it worsens over time or you start to experience spasms in other parts of your face, make an appointment with your doctor.
