The baby who died at an illegal Soho day-care center was a victim of sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, law-enforcement sources believe.
So far, there is no indication that 3-month-old Karl Towndrow was abused or mishandled at Soho Child Care on Greene Street in a way that would have led directly to his death, the sources noted.
“We wouldn’t even be talking about this case if the baby had died at home,” the source said. “Since he died at an unlicensed day-care center in Soho, it’s getting blown out of proportion.”
The boy died on Monday, just hours after his mom dropped him off at the center, his first day at the nursery.
Autopsy results were inconclusive, and further testing will be required to determine the final cause of death.
The medical examiner could take up to two weeks to announce the results.
