Cristina Peerenboom and Kirsten Potenza share a passion for fitness and drumming. It’s only natural that the athletes created the Pound workout, a full-body exercise that combines light resistance, cardio and drumming— and can burn up to 900 calories in a single 45-minute class.

“From 360 degrees all around your body, you’re toning, you’re tightening, you’re targeting areas that are really difficult to target,” Potenza said.

During each class, participants go through 15,000 reps with a modified set of drumsticks called Ripstix, which are twice the weight of normal drumsticks.

“All the pain and repetition is masked by this amazing drumming movement and actually makes it more difficult, but you don’t realize how hard it is because you’re just listening to the beat,” Peerenboom said.

The pounding works more than just your arms, and often, it tones muscles that participants didn’t even know they had.

“I’m a little bit taller, so I really feel it in my legs and my core because I have to squat down really low,” Justin Flexen, a Crunch Gym instructor who takes Pound classes.

Pound classes are taught all over the world and are designed for any fitness level.

“I actually don’t learn very quickly by watching, but I picked it up in one class, not even. It’s just so much fun that you want to dance along,” student Kristi Ann Schopfer said.

The workout offers an at-home version, the Pound Rockout Results System, with DVDs, a nutrition guide and a fitness journal.

“You can literally work through every single day along with our online community that we support on a daily basis, Potenza said.
