Much of how we feel is linked to what we eat.  We received this question from viewer:

Dear Dr. Manny,
I was recently diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome. What kinds of foods should I be eating, and what should I avoid?
Thanks,
Michael

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic condition that affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

Symptoms of these conditions include:

-- Abdominal pain

-- Gas

-- Bloating

-- Diarrhea or constipation

This condition can be debilitating, so it’s important to seek treatment if you start exhibiting symptoms.

Since food is pushed through the intestinal tract more quickly when you have IBS, diet changes can help relieve pain.  Foods to avoid include alcohol, chocolate, caffeine and dairy products, as well as gassy foods like beans, cabbage and broccoli.

Conversely, there are certain foods that can help lessen IBS symptoms – notably those high in fiber.  These foods include flaxseed, oats, nuts, fruits, yams and whole grain breads.
