On what she must do daily
"My workout mantra is 'Break a sweat every day.' Even if it's just for 20 minutes. I'm very disciplined about that. That said, sweating every day doesn't mean you have to go crazy. Even if I'm running with the kids, I feel like I've done something. One day, you know, you might have so much energy that you skip around the block. But if I have the time, I try to do pilates at least twice a week. I've been doing it for 15 years and I think it strengthens from the inside. When your core is strong, everything else starts to lift up."

On her athletic dreams
"A triathlon is on my bucket list. I started training a long time ago and my life took a different turn: Things happen; work happens. I will definitely accomplish that at some point! These days, when I'm running, I look completely schizophrenic. I'll go from running fast to dancing and doing a little skip, and I put my music on and sing really loud. And I love SoulCycle—that's a way to do something active with my friends. You don't feel like you're doing cardio when you're with your friends."

On wanting a tight butt
"That's nice, but if you work out for vanity, you're going to hit walls that are going to feel really bad. Now, my fitness ambition is internal. It's about feeling connected to myself. After I had Ryder, I was sitting at 150 pounds for weeks, exerting so much of my energy looking at numbers [on the scale] and holding on to stress. The second I forgot about the numbers, my weight started to fall."

On self-acceptance
"I've had insecurities. I can look at a picture of Gisele [Bündchen] all day long and say, 'I'll never have legs that long or lips that big.' You have to honor who you are."

On eating
"I make sure I eat well without depriving myself of the things that I love: a cheeseburger and fries, creamy white-truffle pasta, bowls of ice cream. Everything in moderation, but I indulge at least three times a week. Usually I aim for 1,800 calories a day. My friend Ginnifer Goodwin told me about this app MyFitnessPal, and then I got obsessed with it, because knowledge is power. I memorized everything, so if anything gets on the table, I literally know how many calories it is. The greatest day of my life was when I realized a small piece of pizza was only 150 calories. I was like, That means I can have three slices for a meal!"

On the best advice
"My mom once said something so poignant to me: 'Honor your female friendships, because men can come and go, but when we nurture our relationships with women, they can be forever.' I really believe that. My girlfriends are so important to me. They've been my rock-solid foundation. You have a choice: Support the woman standing next to you or compete with her. But if you compete, you're going to be miserable. Stick with what motivates you and makes you happy."
