A rabbi in Pittsburgh is being sued for allegedly botching a circumcision, in which he severed the baby’s penis, UPI.com reported.

Rabbi Mordechai Rosenberg, who performed the bris at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, said he is trained in circumcision. He called the incident a “tragic accident” and a “horrible situation.”

According to the lawsuit, the baby required emergency microsurgery, which lasted eight hours and required six blood transfusions. Doctors were able to successfully reattach the boy’s penis, but he remained in the hospital for two months following the procedure.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, one in 500 baby boys experiences complications as a result of circumcision.
