A trendy West Village restaurant has a new item on its dessert menu to go along with the apple strudel and pumpkin cheesecake — hepatitis A.
Diners who ate dessert at Alta Restaurant on West 10th Street near Sixth Avenue between March 23 and April 2 are at risk of contracting the potentially deadly virus and should get vaccinated immediately, the city’s Health Department warned yesterday.
At least 450 patrons of the four-star tapas joint — which still displayed its “A” Health Department grade last night — could have been exposed through a food handler who has the liver disease.
Symptoms include fatigue, abdominal pain, diarrhea and yellowing of the eyes and skin. About 1 percent of cases are fatal.
No cases have been reported yet, and the infected employee, a woman in the pastry kitchen, no longer works at the Mediterranean restaurant.
“That employee traveled to Mexico and was infected with hepatitis A,” Alta manager Manny Solano said outside the restaurant last night.
“We are working closely with the Health Department to ensure the safety of our customers and our employees as well.”
