A baby who was born with her heart on the outside of her body has survived after doctors at a Texas hospital performed a life-saving surgery, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Doctors at Texas Children’s Hospital said Tuesday that Audrina Cardenas’ condition was discovered during her mother’s pregnancy in week 16. Audrina’s mother, who is from Midland, Texas, was told to go to the hospital where doctors worked to save the baby’s life right after she was born.

Audrina had ectopia cordis, which is a rare, but life-threatening condition where the baby’s heart is either partly or totally outside of the chest. About eight in 1 million babies are born this way, according to the Houston Chronicle.
