Officials with Emory Healthcare say patient information affecting hundreds of thousands has been reported missing from a storage facility.

According to Emory Healthcare President and CEO John Fox, 10 backup discs containing information on surgical patients treated between September 1990 and April 2007 are missing from the storage facility located at Emory Hospital.

The discs, stored in an office cabinet, were discovered missing on Feb. 20. They contained information on every surgery patient treated in 17-year period leading up to 2007, including the patient names, around 228,000 Social Security numbers, their diagnoses and surgical information.

It's not clear if the discs were taken, or misplaced, but Fox says the hospital system has launched an internal investigation and notified Emory police.
