Employee tests positive for TB, blames employer

An employee of the Charter Oak Health Center in Hartford, Conn., has tested positive for tuberculosis due to a possible exposure to TB at the clinic, the Hartford Courant reported.

After working for the clinic for five years, the woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said she is angry about the lack of information from clinic officials about the risk of TB exposure.

She said that many of the clinic’s employees are calling in sick for fear of being exposed to tuberculosis at work, according to the Courant.

“Some people are afraid to go back,” she said. “A lot of people are mad and upset.”

Another major concern for the woman is whether or not her two young children have contracted TB since she tested positive for it.  She plans to have them screened at another facility because she has doubts about the safety of the Charter Oak clinic.

A nurse practitioner at Charter Oak, who also wished to remain anonymous, said that the danger associated with tuberculosis is relatively small, according to the newspaper, but she is upset because no one has taken charge of the situation.
