Need more energy this holiday season?

The Medicine Hunter, Chris Kilham, recently stopped by to talk with Dr. Manny Alvarez, senior managing health editor of FoxNews.com, about three herbs that will help improve your brain function and give you the energy you need for shopping or enduring those long family visits.

1. Chyawanprash
Kilham said this herbal jam is one of the most popular items in every Indian household.
“It tastes like prunes and has energizing herbs and spices,” Kilham said. “It’s really like the herbal, one-a-day formula. You can put it on toast, eat it off a spoon and it’s not one of those gross remedies.”

Kilham said it’s available at any Indian grocery store or Whole Foods.

2. Rodioloa
Rodiola improves mental function, enhances immunity and boosts energy,” Kilham noted.

And – if you happen to be suffering from erectile dysfunction, it’s good for that too.

“According to a study, there was a 68 percent improvement for men with ED who took rodioloa,” Kilham said. “You can’t overdo it. You can get it in capsules, and it won’t interact negatively with medicines. But it does lower stress hormones in the blood.”

Kilham said rodiola is also being used by psychiatrists around the world to treat depression and mental fatigue.

3. Ginseng
This Chinese herb can be taken in liquid form or capsules. It improves brain function, concentration and memory.

“Especially during the holidays, if you are overindulging, ginseng is a nice counterbalance to that,” Kilham said.
