Boston Student Dies From Suspected Case of Meningitis

BOSTON – A Boston seventh grader has died from a probable case of bacterial meningitis.

Health officials say the 12-year-old girl from Boston Latin Academy was hospitalized over the weekend.

The student's name was not immediately released.

Health officials say a "relatively small number" of students and staff may be at risk of infection. They're encouraging anyone who had close contact with the girl to seek medical attention.

The Boston Globe reports there were eight confirmed cases of bacterial meningitis in Massachusetts last year.
