Unwanted hair loss, unbearable hair growth, unstoppable weight gain, unfortunate sagging skin… The march of time brings with it a veritable buffet of negative effects. Aging may be inevitable, but that doesn’t mean that you have to sit back and watch it wreak havoc on your body. There’s no stopping the hands of time, but there are things you can do that don't involve going under the knife to help slow (or mask) the effects of aging, so you can look like the young, virile man you know you are on the inside.
Botox injections
A temporary fix for wrinkles, especially around the eyes, Botox works by relaxing the muscles that cause frown lines and crow’s-feet. Wonder where the name, Botox, comes from? Botox is derived from a toxin, botulinum. In large doses, botulinum can lead to a very dangerous botulism, but in tiny doses, it relieves unsightly wrinkles. Although Botox is more popular with women, more and more men who don’t want that angry, furrowing brow are looking into this treatment. Typical Botox therapy includes a series of short injections around the wrinkle site. Treatments usually last from three to six months.
Cost: Prices range from $200 to $300 for each area that you want temporarily smoothed over.
HGH therapy
The human growth hormone (HGH) is one of many endocrine secretions, and it is responsible for metabolizing fats and taking in amino acids. Amounts of this hormone decline as you get older, and some men have had success using it to treat—and sometimes reverse—many dreaded signs of aging. Results of HGH therapy include a reduction in body fat, an increase in muscle mass, a heightened sex drive, restoration of hair growth, and lowered blood pressure and cholesterol.
Cost: The length of HGH therapy depends on each person’s needs, but you can expect to spend anywhere from $150 to $300 a month after your initial consultation.
Testosterone replacement therapy
As a man ages his testosterone production declines. Many doctors blame these decreased levels of testosterone for causing the not-so-pleasant side effect of aging called andropause, otherwise known as male menopause. There’s hope, however: Replacing the testosterone you lose may help fight the condition. Symptoms of andropause like a decreased sex drive or performance ability, reduced muscle mass, and depression stand the chance of being reversed with testosterone replacement therapy. It can also be used to prevent prostate cancer. Testosterone is usually administered via injection, but some men find success in using a cream.
Cost: After the cost of the initial visit, which will vary between doctors, you can expect to shell out more than $200 for the first testosterone level test, with about $150 for each retest, and about $100 for each monthly treatment.

Age-defying cosmetics
Gently smoothing a serum with crushed pearls or caviar extracts over your troublesome wrinkled areas might not seem like the most manly way to fight the signs of aging, but expensive cosmetic creams are gaining popularity among men. Some of the brains behind the treatments suggest the new technologies in the creams and serums can speed up the removal and renewal rate of dead skin cells many times faster than normal skin, and can even create replicas of growth-stimulating DNA.
Cost: Prices tend to vary per product. You can spend anywhere from $50 a bottle to $600 an ounce.
Extensive cleansing regimen
If the best defense is a good offense, an exfoliating facial cleanser could be just what your skin needs. Along with the important job of simply keeping your face clean, a good cleanser will also exfoliate; getting rid of dead skin cells and stimulating new skin cell growth. At any rate, following a cleansing schedule is an important step in helping to prevent, diminish or slow down any signs of aging.
Cost: A range of cleansers exists, from your typical $7 drugstore brand to the high-end products made with exotic ingredients, which could cost you $100 or more.
Not all these methods are a guaranteed success for everyone, so after a certain point, you must accept the fact that age is one of those unpleasant facts of life. Nobody can cheat it forever. But until your chosen fountain of youth runs out, your preferred antiaging method can provide a safe haven, and help bridge the gap between the energetic, youthful person you know you are and the person you see in the mirror.
