Woman Carries Baby Outside Uterus to Term

A woman in Phoenix was celebrating Tuesday after giving birth to a baby boy that had been growing outside of her uterus.

Nicollette Soto carried the fetus outside her womb after it attached to the area where the fallopian tube meets the uterus -- a rare and dangerous condition known as a cornual pregnancy.

Doctors noticed that the baby was developing outside the uterus at 20 weeks, putting Soto's life at risk. They offered to operate but the 27-year-old declined.

Her son, Azelan Cruz Perfecto, was born at 32 weeks at the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center on Monday morning, weighing just two pounds, 14 ounces. He will remain in the neo-natal unit for at least a month.

"It's very unusual, she's very fortunate and we are pleased that she and the baby are doing well," said Dr. Curtis Cook from Phoenix Perinatal Associations. "To her credit, she absolutely wanted to push through even it was putting herself at risk."

The doctors believe this is the only positive outcome they know of in a cornual pregnancy.
