CDC: One-Third of Sex Ed Omits Birth Control

ATLANTA – The government says nearly all U.S. teens have had formal sex education, but only about two-thirds have been taught about birth control methods.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey of teens found that 97 percent said they got sex education by the time they were 18.

But the lessons were more likely to teach how to say no or cover sexually transmitted diseases than tell teens how to use a condom or other birth control. Only 62 percent of boys got birth control instruction by the end of high school, while 70 percent of girls did.

The CDC released the report Wednesday.
