The controversy surrounding Rainbow Doritos, the special-edition snack released to build support for gay and lesbian youth-isn't letting up anytime soon.
After the rainbow-colored chips debuted last week-- in partnership with the pro-LBGT non-profit group It Gets Better--people have been taking to social media and the Doritos Facebook page to voice their displeasure and threaten Frito-Lay boycotts.
And now Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is adding a dissenting voice by asking Frito-Lay, a subsidiary of PepsiCo that produces Doritos, to end its relationship with the group and its outspoken co-founder, Dan Savage.
“Please tell me that you will publicly disassociate yourself with his hate-filled rhetoric, bigotry toward people of faith, and the violent threats he has issued,” Huckabee wrote in a letter to the company.
Savage is known for lambasting conservatives—including Huckabee--with profanity-laced attacks targeting Christian leaders and the faith. The former Arkansas governor also pointed to an example where Savage told presidential hopeful Ben Carson to “suck my d#ck” after Carson, a medical doctor, tried to argue that being gay was a choice.
“I am stunned that a corporation with a long history of making snack food would partner with someone whose vile, vulgar violent and anti-Christian bigotry is well documented,” Huckabee wrote in his letter.
Huckabee's spokesman told Fox News that they have not heard back from the makers of Doritos.
But a company representative says that its involvement with It Gets Better did not extend to a partnership with Savage.
Frito-Lay spokeswoman Alexia Allina issued the following statement to FoxNews.com: “The limited-time Doritos Rainbows all have been claimed and the program has concluded. Details around the fundraising efforts will be shared in the future at an appropriate time. Important to note, our involvement has just been with the It Gets Better Project. We have not partnered with Dan Savage, and he has not been involved with this initiative.”
The rainbow colored chips, which were only available to people who donated $10 to the organization, raised for $100,000 for It Gets Better.
