The Oxo Three-in-One Avocado Slicer ($9.99) promises to “split, pit, slice and scoop avocados safely and effectively.”
Does it? And if so, should you have one?
The device is made of three parts: a plastic blade to cut through the skin, a pitting tool to remove the hard center, and a fan blade to slice the inside of the avocado into separate pieces.
With the blades situated on opposite ends of the tool, it was nerve-wracking for one tester to use the slicer end while the cutting-blade end was so close to the wrist.
Despite not being sharp to the touch, the plastic blade cut easily through the fruit and the slicer easily separated the insides of the avocado into different pieces. They weren’t as neatly sliced as expected, but that may have been due to how ripe the avocado was.
One tester found the fan blade to be especially useful for making guacamole, because the fan was easy to mash the avocado with.
The pitting tool in the center of the slicer is designed to grasp onto the avocado pit and lift it out easily, and this worked well. However, it wasn’t much easier than take using a regular knife.
Verdict: It does what it advertises, but doesn’t do anything that a knife can’t.
