McDonald's has rolled out a brand new menu option: Favorites Under 400 Calories. Unlike the Dollar Menu, this strategy doesn’t market what you can purchase for under a certain dollar amount, but rather, what you can purchase for a certain number of calories.
The low-cal menu includes a McDouble burger, an Angus Snack Wrap with bacon and cheese, an order of medium fries, a Sausage McMuffin, an order of 6-piece Chicken McNuggets and an Oreo McFlurry. If that surprises you, you're not alone.
“We've found that customers are surprised to learn about the calorie content of some of their favorite menu options at McDonald's," said Neil Golden, chief marketing officer of McDonald’s USA. “About 80 percent of national menu choices are under 400 calories for the standard recipe," he added.
The new menu comes as the fast-food chain finds itself in the midst of a controversy over whether a restaurant linked to concerns about rising rates of obesity should be a major sponsor of the 2012 Olympic Games.
While some might see the promotion as a creative and convenient way to navigate the menu, others may view it as another attempt by McDonald's to promote itself as a health-conscious food chain.
