Chad Pergram has one rule, and that’s to keep up.
For FNCU intern Cristina Marcos, keeping up hasn’t been difficult at all. In fact, working in a fast-paced environment that’s always buzzing was one of the reasons why her career goal is to work as a political journalist covering all things on Capitol Hill.
As an intern in FNCU’s College of Communications, Marcos is paired with Fox News journalist Chad Pergram, reporting on the daily workings of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
“I love to cover the Congress beat,” Marocs said. “People love to hate the legislature because the political process is so open, but at the same time, that’s the reason why it’s so much fun. It’s just pure politics at its finest.”
Marcos, a junior at the College of William and Mary, is majoring in government, but has always been a political junkie. Coupled with her love of writing, an FNCU internship takes her two passions and combines them.
Every morning, Marcos reports to Capitol Hill, but her intern responsibilities vary daily. One moment she may be helping at press conferences, and another she may be back in the DC Bureau working on the web.
Although her background is in print journalism, Marcos has had the chance to work across broadcast and radio platforms.
“That’s why I love it so much,” she said. “It’s always an adventure every day.”
If Marcos has learned one thing from her experience at FNCU and interning with Pergram, it’s how to communicate information clearly and concisely.
“The arcaneness of some congressional procedures can make the legislative process seem closed and exclusionary at times,” Marcos said. “But this experience has really taught me how to translate the daily happenings into something more open and inclusive.”
From the transportation bill to the payroll tax to Eric Holder’s “Fast and Furious,” Marcos has attended all kinds of Congressional hearings. Her favorite moment on Capitol Hill was watching President Obama’s State of the Union address from Statuary Hall.
”I could be back in Williamsburg where not much has changed since 1693…but here I was, living history,” she said.
After her internship with FNCU, Marcos hopes to one day work as a senior Congressional producer for Fox and says there is no better place to intern than at Fox News Channel during an election year.
“For a political junkie, this is a total dream,” she said. “I really have a front row seat to the whole process.”
Marcos would like to thank everyone at Fox News Channel, and especially Chad Pergram.
