The following list was compiled after surveying students who had participated in or are participating in the study abroad program at American University.
1. London, England
London has long been the top study abroad destination, and it doesn't take a genius to figure out why-for English-speaking students going abroad, it's one of the places where you don't have to be studying a foreign language to get by. But, don't be fooled. Their English, although similar, has some subtle differences that can make for interesting exchanges.
In all seriousness, London offers some of the top study abroad opportunities. While studying in London, students not only have the opportunity to learn about Shakespeare and King Henry VIII, but they also have the opportunity to experience it in person. Also, because of its proximity to other countries, students have the chance to hop on a train or flight to experience other cultures in the EU.
2. Paris, France
Paris is probably the most-visited city on earth, and it receives an enormous number of study abroad participants each year. Many of those students probably head directly for Paris and don't look back - and who can blame them? The city is romantic and magical, even on a student's budget.
3. Rome, Italy
Rome is one of the most beautiful cities you'll experience on the Mediterranean-with its proximity to the ocean, and not forgetting the amazing food you'll taste while living there. If you want to study in Germany, you have to go to Berlin. Students will find themselves perfectly at home in this bustling, exuberant city. And, from the restaurants and bars to the nightclubs and concert halls, there is sure to be something for everyone in Berlin.
9. Copenhagen, Denmark
Copenhagen is a friendly, open city crammed with cute cafés, clubs that regularly host international bands and DJs, cool clothing stores, and a large number of parks and beaches. For students, this city is safe, and has a small town feel. For those looking for a Scandinavian adventure, this is the place to go!

China has been on the rise as a popular place to study abroad for many years now, probably mostly due to the country's overall rise on the world stage as an economic power. And, even though learning the language is very difficult, the culture, and geographical location are still causing students to flock to this bustling city.
