The 5 Most Awkward Moments at the 2015 MTV VMAs
As we've illustrated several times in the past, live awards ceremonies are never without a few awkward moments. The MTV VMAs, however, are seemingly made up of mostly awkward moments.

That's not to say those awkward moments aren't a lot of fun to watch. Between the barely-there outfits, the rambling acceptance speeches and the unpredictable performances, we gleefully soaked up every moment like an absorbent mop — very much like the one we imagine MTV used to sop up all of Justin Bieber's tears at the end of his performance (see below).
So without further ado, here's what we consider to be the most awkward moments of Sunday's VMAs:
Rebel Wilson's T-Shirt
When presenting the award for Best Hip-Hop Video, "Pitch Perfect" actress Rebel Wilson began a fake tirade against strippers who dress as police officers, culminating in Wilson herself stripping down to a shirt that read "F*** tha Stripper Police." The whole thing was probably meant to play off of the N.W.A. song "F*** tha Police," but the connection was tenuous at best, she's already gotten backlash on Twitter for making light of current controversies surrounding police brutality.
Justin Bieber Crying
At the end of Justin Bieber's performance of "What Do You Mean?", he flew up into the air in a diaper-like harness for like three seconds before landing back on the stage, where he doubled over and broke down in tears. (He's already been called out for fake-crying, of course). Weirder still, Miley Cyrus' only response was take off her jacket, reveal a skimpy leotard, and beckon Justin to "call me when you're legal."
Nicki Minaj Calls Miley Out
Nicki Minaj ended her acceptance speech for Best Hip-Hop Video by calling Miley Cyrus the b-word. "And now back to this b**** that had a lot to say about me in the press," said Minaj, referring to Miley calling her "not too nice" and "not too kind" in an interview with The New York Times. Miley brushed it off by blaming the press for misconstruing her words, but the tension was palpable through the TV screen.
Kanye West's Video Vanguard Speech
Kanye West's acceptance speech for the 2015 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award included, but did not limit itself to: telling a long-winded story about how he's "not that bad after all"; pointing out how he once saw Justin Timberlake cry when he didn't win Album of the Year at the 2007 Grammys; admitting that he "rolled up a little something" to smoke before coming on stage; getting miffed with MTV for having the gaul to promote his Video Vanguard award; getting miffed at the whole idea of awards ceremonies in general; and announcing his intentions to run for president in 2020. And that's not to mention the few minutes he stood there, absolutely silent, soliciting applause from the crowd.
We Get It, Miley — You Smoke Pot
Cyrus referred to the fact that she enjoys marijuana several times during the broadcast, and with all the subtlety of a college freshman who wants you to know he's "cool." She mentioned it during her interludes, in a pre-filmed segment, and even in her live performance at the end of the show, which featured the chorus, "Yeah I smoke pot, yeah I love peace / But I don't give a f***, I ain't no hippy."
