Real Estate Blog Determines States With Most Hippies and States With Most 'Squares'

Do you live in a place that's populated by a bunch of total squares? Or is your state of residence, like, totally far out? READ: Real Estate Blog Finds 'Nerdiest States in America' If you lethargically raised your henna-adorned hand to proclaim your belief in the latter statement, chances are good that you currently live in Vermont, Maine or New Hampshire. A recent study conducted by the real estate website Estately has found that the far Northeast harbors more hippies, per capita, than any other area in the nation. To determine their results, Estately ranked each state (along with Washington, D.C. ) on a scale of 1 through 51 in each of four categories: the number of communes per state; the number of food co-ops; the prevalence of Etsy shops that sell hemp, patchouli or tie-dyed goods; and the prevalence of Facebook users who list "cannabis," "tie-dye," "peace," "LSD," "hippies," "the Grateful Dead," "Phish," or "Bob Dylan" among their interests. The three most Northeast states scored highest overall, with Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire coming in first, second and third, followed by Oregon and Colorado in the fourth and fifth spot. READ: New Study Reveals Which States Are the Best and Worst Tippers Conversely, the same study has named Mississippi as our most "square" state — and not in terms of geometry. Mississippi ranked lowest overall, coming in dead last in terms of Etsy crafts and fairly low in all other categories. Louisiana, Texas, New Jersey and Georgia didn't do much better, coming in second through fifth, respectively. It should be noted, however, that Estately didn't conduct a separate study to deliberately find the squarest state in America, but merely looked to the lowest-scoring states in their grooviest state survey. One would imagine the outcome might be different if Estately scoured Facebook for interests including "narcing on your friends" and "hassling burnouts." Curious about the grooviness and/or squareness of the places near you? Check out Estately's chart to find out if you live in a hippie haven, or if your whole state is a pretty beat scene:
