Worst on-screen super heroes of all time

Landing a role as a hero doesn’t necessarily make you one in real life. These stars learned that the hard way when their capes and super powers landed them in the critics’ dog house. Hey, at least the costumes were cool. Mostly.

  • Daredevil
Ben Affleck as Daredevil The red body suit Ben Affleck wore as the lead super hero in 2003 blockbuster “Daredevil” showed off his chiseled abs quite nicely, but his performance was such a flop that even he has admitted to not liking the film.  Warner Bros.’ decision to give him a second chance at super hero stardom as Batman in the upcoming sequel to “Man of Steel” has ,thusly, garnered mixed reactions. • Elektra
Jennifer Garner as Elektra Maybe falling for now-husband Ben Affleck blinded Garner from her shortcomings as Elektra in “Daredevil,” because she made the ill-informed decision to star in a spin-off in 2005. Her second flop as a red bustier-wearing assassin proved that she should probably stick to romantic comedies.   (Twentieth Century Fox)

  • Green_Lantern
Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern It’s not easy being green -- just ask Ryan Reynolds. His stint in “Green Lantern” bombed at the box office in 2011, as fans criticized his too soft approach to the character, along with the film’s predictable plot and cheap effects. Unsurprisingly, Reynolds turned down an offer to star in a sequel. At least the guy knows when to throw in the towel. (Warner Bros.)

  • Catwoman
Halle Berry as Catwoman Halle Berry can rock a leather cat suit like no one else, but even that couldn’t save her “unrecognizable” performance as the 2004 stinker’s heroine. The film took home four not-so-coveted Razzie Awards, including Berry’s for Worst Actress. "I want to thank Warner Bros. for casting me in this piece-of-sh*t, god-awful movie," she so gratefully stated. (Warner Bros.)

  • Hulk
Eric Bana as the Hulk Unlike Halle Berry, Eric Bana defended himself against critics of 2003 film “Hulk,” saying he was “really proud of it.” Although he expressed interest in reprising the role for a sequel, in part to prove himself to critical viewers, Marvel wised up and went in a different direction with Edward Norton for “The Incredible Hulk” in 2008. • Spider_Man_3
Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man in “Spider-Man 3” Tobey Maguire’s Spidey sense failed him the third time around, when the actor’s portrayal just got overly whiny and annoying. We get it, the black suit changed Peter Parker from a lovable nerd to a colossal jerk, but Maguire could have toned down the emo—and the eyeliner. (Columbia Pictures)

  • Ghost_Rider
Nicolas Cage as Ghost Rider Nicolas Cage was reportedly stoked to play a comic book character in 2007 film “Ghost Rider,” but it turned out that his oddball personality just didn’t mesh with the demonic biker role. He tried again in a sequel, “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance,” but finally learned that if the first movie is bad, the second is probably going to be worse. He then announced he was done with the franchise, because really, once you’ve urinated fire onscreen, there’s nowhere left to go but down. (Columbia Pictures)

Everyone in 1994’s “Fantastic Four” Alex Hyde-White, Jay Underwood, Rebecca Staab… no one could save this low-budget film from failure. Lucky for the general public, they decided to not even bother releasing it. Not that much money was wasted, but we’ll never get the one minute and 26 seconds of our lives back that we spent watching the trailer. (New Horizons)

  • Superman_III
Christopher Reeve as Superman in “Superman III and IV” Didn’t anyone ever warn Christopher Reeve about too much of a good thing? The actor’s beloved performances as Superman in the first and second movies can’t be forgotten, but by the third and fourth it seemed he was running out of steam, as were the writers. Jessica Biel as Abigail Whistler Playing Abigail Whistler in “Blade: Trinity” in 2004 is probably one of those times in Jessica Biel’s life she tries to forget, along with her unflattering tomboy stage in “7th Heaven.”  OK she looked way hotter with a bow and arrow strapped to her perfectly toned body, but entering an already tired series in its third round is never a good idea. Adrianne Palicki as Wonder Woman “Friday Night Lights” actress Adrianne Palicki was so bad in this 2011 Warner Bros. TV pilot “Wonder Woman” that it never even aired. We don’t know for sure what made NBC say “no thanks” in the end, but maybe it was the costume, which looked straight off the rack from Party City. (Reuters)
