No stranger to controversy, the actor -- once lauded as one of Hollywood's biggest success stories, has fallen on hard times over the last few years.
Between arrests, substance abuse issues, violent rants and bigoted comments, Gibson's image has taken a very serious hit.
Let's check out some of the more ludicrous things he has said and done over the last two decades.
In 1991, Mel made some inappropriate comments to the Spanish newspaper "El Pais" about homosexuality.
He later gave a lukewarm apology saying, "I shouldn't have said it, but I was tickling a bit of vodka during that interview, and the quote came back to bite me on the *ss."
On Terri Schiavo
Even though Mel Gibson had no connection to Terri Schiavo, the woman who made headlines from 1998-2005, during which her family had to decide what to do when she was left brain dead and a court decided to remove her feeding tube, Mel went on commenting for weeks.
“It’s just completely wrong to deprive this poor woman of food and water,” Gibson said. “It’s a prolonged and cruel execution.”
“I just sit here watching this whole scenario play out in front of me with my mouth hanging wide open," he said. “It’s nothing more than state-sanctioned murder... to just go right to this crucifixion of this woman … even a dog has more rights."
Mel Against Clinton
In a July 1995 interview with Playboy magazine, Mel called then President Clinton, a "low-level opportunist." He also talked about conspiracy theories and how the Rhodes Scholarship was just a new campaign for Marxism.
'The Passion of the Christ'
Mel directed the controversial 2004 film about the last days of Jesus Christ. While Christian groups have lauded the film, which was a huge box office hit, other critics charged that it was anti-Semitic and not biblically accurate.
Drunk and Disorderly
In 2006, Mel Gibson apparently went off about Jews when he was stopped for driving under the influence.
"F*****g Jews," the actor was quoted as saying. "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Then he went on to ask the officer, "Are you a Jew?"
In July 2010, some crazy voice mails purported to be left by Gibson were leaked to the press and a firestorm ensued. Allegedly left on then-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva's voicemail, the Oscar-winner referred to her as "a f***ing pig in heat." He went on to say, "and if you get raped by a pack of n****ers it will be your fault."
And the rant went on and on.
He closed with: "I am going to come and burn the f***ing house down... but you will b**w me first."
Well, we can certainly rule out subtlety from his personality traits.
Unfortunately, it appears Mel doesn't only hurt people with his words. In 2011, he was also accused of physically assaulting his girlfriend at the time Oksana Grigorieva, the same woman on whom his latest rant focuses on.
The Newest Rant
Screenwriter Joe Eszterhas recently witnessed a new Mel Gibson tirade after the producer failed to produce a draft of the script for "The Maccabbees," a project he was set to work on with the actor.
“Why don’t I have a first draft of ‘The Maccabees’? What the f*** have you been doing?” a voice, presumabley Mel's is heard saying in a recently released recording. “I am earning money for a filthy little … [person] who takes advantage of me.”
In recent years, the actor has become better known for his rants than his movies.
