Dead ‘Jeopardy!’ contestant on five-day winning streak
‘Jeopardy!’ contestant Cindy Stowell is currently on a five-day winning streak. She died from cancer before her episodes of game show aired. Stowell chose to donate all winnings to cancer research charities
A “Jeopardy!” contestant’s inspiring run continued into its fifth night on Monday when Cindy Stowell again finished victorious in the game show’s latest episode.
Stowell, who died of cancer at age 41 on Dec. 5, eight days before her first episode aired, fought from behind to add another $18,001 to her winnings after finishing the first round of play in third place with negative $800. Her five-day haul now totals $80,002.
She beat out Jonathan Bill, a high school teacher from Gig Harbor, Wash., and Kristin Szuhany a graduate student from New York City to win the episode.
A science content-developer from Austin, Texas, Stowell taped her appearance in August while battling stage 4 colon cancer and knowing she had about six months to live. Her family said she donated her prize winnings to cancer-research organizations prior to her death.
Only host Alex Trebek and a few staffers — and none of Stowell’s opponents — were aware of her illness at the time.
She will compete again in the Dec. 20 episode.
