The Organic Consumers Association is claiming that the infant formula produced and sold by Jessica Alba’s Honest Co. as organic actually includes synthetic ingredients not allowed by federal law.
According to a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, the association claims that of the 40 ingredients in the company’s infant formula, “more than a quarter are synthetic substances that are not allowed in organic products.”
In fact, some are “federally regulated as hazardous compounds,” the lawsuit reads, according to the New York Post.
“At least one of these ingredients is irradiated … some have not been assessed as safe for human foods, much less for infant formulas,” the suit argues.
The substances listed include sodium selenite, cholecalciferol and calcium pantothenate.
Alba nor Honest Co. have commented on the lawsuit.
The claims against Honest Co. are part of a larger OCA lawsuit that also alleges that the lines of organic infant formula by Earth’s Best, owned by the Hain Celestial group, “contain a spectacular array of ingredients that are … non-organic, all of which are prohibited.”
A Hain Celestial representative told the Post that its infant formulas fully comply with USDA’s National Organic Program standards. “We are confident that the court will dismiss this lawsuit,” he said.
This new lawsuit against Honest Co. follows several class-action suits filed by customers who claim the company is practicing deceptive marketing and fraudulent labeling on its products.
In 2015, customers filed a suit alleging that it had altered its sunscreen formula and removed the chemical that protects skin from the sun. Some users shared photos of their sunburned bodies, calling out the sunscreen as ineffective, despite the lotion claiming it has SPF 30, with “broad spectrum, mineral-based protection.”
