Getting more forceful in her desire to buy a disputed Los Angeles convent, Katy Perry is now suing her rival would-be purchaser.
In court documents filed last week, the singer accused developer Dana Hollister of interfering with her contract with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles and of taking advantage of the nuns who own it.
The New York Times reported that Perry believes Hollister “took advantage of vulnerable, elderly nuns, who she malevolently convinced to oppose the Roman Catholic Church” and reject the singer’s $14.5 million cash offer for the hillside property.
The convent, the former home of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, has been enveloped in litigation between the elderly nuns, the Archdiocese, Hollister and Perry for several months after the nuns disputed the diocese's attempts to sell the property.
A judge ruled earlier this month that Hollister could pay rent to the nuns pending the final decision about the sale, but she was ordered to vacate. She had initially offered to buy the property for $15.5 million — $1 million more than the pop singer.
According to the Times, the new lawsuit names both the Archdiocese and the nuns’ congregation as defendants. It also made no claims against the aging nuns, who were described as “victims” of Hollister in the suit.
The L.A. Times reported in June that Perry had previously met with the nuns and revealed she “wanted to live on the property with her mother and her grandmother, sit in the mediation garden, sip green tea and find herself.” However, the nuns were not impressed with Perry and went ahead with Hollister’s proposal.
