Award-winning country singer Lucas Hoge is celebrating Memorial Day in a very special way -- by traveling overseas to perform for American servicemen and women. The singer spoke to FOX411 Country about his trip, and why we should all be proud to be Americans.

FOX411 Country: You do a lot of work for our troops. How did you get started?

Lucas Hoge: I’ve always been a big advocate to support our service men and women and when I was in high school, I thought I was going to go into our military, you know, because my dad was in the military, my uncle, my cousins, everybody. And when it came down to it...I just wasn't wired for it so I figured the only way I was going to give back in the future was to go over and entertain. So for the last seven years, I've been able to go overseas and entertain for our service men and women over there on the Wrangler National Patriot Tour...and it just feels like that just the least I can do to say thank you from the western and country [music] industry.

FOX411 Country: Do you think other Americans share your appreciation for the military?

Hoge: I really do. I think in the last few wars that have come up, Desert Storm and the conflict that we are in now, I think has brought awareness to a lot of, you know, things through the military that might have gotten bad press back in the day. [Like in] Vietnam and the Korean War...where a lot of service men and women didn't get the attention that they should have for fighting the fight for us back then. I think [current events have] brought awareness so that people over here now are really more receptive of the job that [the troops] are doing to protect our borders and protect just our way of life here and our freedoms.

FOX411 Country: Memorial Day is very important to you. What will you be doing this year?

Hoge: We always plan [the Wrangler National Patriot Tour] around Memorial Day because it's kind of a real intense time for all of our service men and women and we kind of just want to go over there and take them out of their element a little bit. Tell them thank you and I'll play them some songs and we'll give them some swag...it's always great to go over there during that time.

FOX411 Country: What do we have to be proud of as a country?

Hoge: I think that one of the things our nation should be proud of the most is really coming together in hard times. I mean, if you look at all the wars and all the conflicts and all the destruction that's happening, no matter where it is, regionally or globally, our people come together as a group, as a nation, as a pack of people and they help get through it...So I think our nation should be very, very proud about that and they should be happy about the support they give our troops.
