Jeremy Renner and Chris Evans have whipped up a media firestorm for using the words "slut" and "whore" to describe their "Avengers" costar Scarlett Johansson’s character.
The pair were being interviewed by DigitalSpy for their movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” in which Renner plays Hawkye and Evans is Captain America. While discussing Johansson’s Black Widow character Renner says, “She’s a slut,” causing Evans to burst into peals of laughter. “I was gonna say something along that line,” Evans says laughingly. “She’s a complete whore!” he adds.
Since the video was released many Twitter users have criticized the stars for their choice of words.
The Renner/Evans video is disappointing not just because of the sexism, but because we keep building our faves up as being beyond sexism.

The Renner/Evans video clip is evidence of how deeply ingrained sexist attitudes are in our culture and how oblivious men can be to that.

The more I think about the Renner/Evans comments, the more irritated/disappointed I get. It's such a glaring example of dudebro culture...

However some social media users stood by the actors, insisting their words were not meant to be taken seriously.
I think Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner were obviously joking about Black Widow. No need to make a big deal out of it...

Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner made a joke. This is about context, people. Move on.

Evans told FOX411 in a statement he regrets his choice of words.
"Yesterday we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America," the statement read. "We answered in a juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize."
Renner has yet to tweet or comment about the backlash.
