It may well go down as one of the most embarrassing first dates in history. An unlucky contestant on the New Zealand version of "The Bachelor" was left red faced after farting on TV.

Poppy, a 24-year-old yoga instructor from the UK was on her first date with handsome Bachelor Arthur Green, who runs a paleo diet company, when the awkward moment occurred.

"The Bachelor," 26, took the blonde English rose on a romantic beachside picnic on the second episode of "The Bachelor" NZ,and as she sat down, she audibly passed wind.

“Oh it is beautiful,” Poppy said as she sat down. “This is pretty magical.”

To which her chivalrous suitor replied: “Did you just fart?”

The bubbly bachelorette, who according to her bio, “has a positive attitude and loves to turn bad situations into good ones”, did just that — making light of her inopportune bodily function.

“I slipped in the sand,” she quipped.

“Squeaky sand, hey?” Arthur wryly replied.

“It is always a matter of time before someone farts in front of someone else isn’t it?”

“Usually not on the first date,” Poppy admitted.

The unfortunate incident didn’t dash the brave contestant’s chances though, with Poppy still winning a rose from her amour and a chance of love.

“I love the way she owned up to it — it was hilarious!” Arthur later said.

In her biography on "The Bachelor" website, Poppy’s words to live by may provide a clue to her resilient attitude: “Nothing happens to those who aren’t afraid to look silly every once and a while.”

Truer words have never been spoken.
