Colombian pop star Shakira does not shy away from the spotlight, but she would love for the press to stay away from her son.
The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer told daily Spanish newspaper ABC that she wants the press to leave her nearly two-year-old son Milan alone. In recent weeks she has declined to be photographed with her son.
“I liked being able to share with fans and the people who have always supported us the experience of being parents and the first months of my son's life,” she told the newspaper. “But now that Milan is growing and has stopped being a baby, I would prefer it if the press did not focus so much on him. I would like him to enjoy a normal childhood, as much as that is possible.”
Shakira and her boyfriend, Spanish soccer player Gerard Pique, shared the first public photograph of their first child sleeping in his father’s arms on the Unicef website just days after he was born in early 2013.
Since then, the toddler and his parents have been photographed many times together – while playing at the park or watching Pique play with Barcelona. But now Shakira, who is pregnant again, wants it to end.
“Milan still does not realize that Gerard and I are famous, because that is all he knows,” she said. “He recognizes us on television and in ads, he points and says ‘Mama! Papa!’ but does not know that other kids do not find the image of their parents on a toy box.”
Shakira, 37 and Pique, 27, first met during the 2010 World Cup and made their relationship public soon after. They are set to become parents to another baby boy early in the new year.
