CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager says he is leaving that role after four years to go back to his former full-time job as top producer at "60 Minutes."

Fager said Thursday that David Rhodes, the CBS News president, will assume full control over the network's news division. Fager has continued as "60 Minutes" producer while running the news division.

While CBS has remained in third place in its flagship evening and morning newscasts, Fager has given the network's programs a harder news identity than its rivals. The network's Sunday morning show with Charles Osgood and Bob Schieffer's "Face the Nation" have done particularly well in the past couple of years.

CBS earlier this month began a streaming news service to offer a cable news-like experience on the web.
