Ebola has dominated the news headlines on a daily basis recently, and soon there could be a small-screen series about the deadly virus.
Producer Lynda Obst is in the process of developing a limited series for Fox TV Studios based on Richard Preston’s 1994 best-selling non-fiction book, “The Hot Zone.” “The Hot Zone” was first optioned 20 years ago, and according to Hollywood Reporter, Ridley Scott is also linked to the project.
Obst told us the series has “actually been in development for over a year.”
“It’s a strange and upsetting coincidence that we all happen to be experiencing this current scare, and we’re of course extremely sensitive about it,” she said in an email.
She added that the project is far from finished and clarified that it “would never air during this current news cycle.”
An outbreak of the virus began in March in West Africa, and more than 4,000 people have died from the current strain of the virus.
Two nurses in the U.S. have tested positive and are being treated for Ebola after they came in contact with Thomas Eric Duncan, the man who died of the virus at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital on Oct. 8.
The project was originally conceived as a film that would star Jodie Foster, according to The Hollywood Reporter, but it has since morphed into a mini-series. A source told FOX411 Foster had no involvement in the mini-series.
"A limited series is a great way to do this because you don't have to limit it to a three-act structure like you do with a film,” Obst told the site.
