Everyone is throwing ice on themselves for a good cause.
A social media campaign with an effort to raise awareness – and cash – for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is taking the world by storm. And it has no signs of slowing down.
Over the last couple of days, dozens of celebrities – including Jennifer Lopez, Demi Lovato, Cristano Ronaldo, and even Oprah – poured buckets of ice cold water on their heads to raise awareness for the condition also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Many also donated $100 or more to fund research projects.
The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association said Monday that more than $15.6 million has been raised in donations since July 29, compared to the $1.8 million collected during the same time period last year.
Without hesitation actress Jessica Alba took the challenge alongside friends Nicole Richie and Gavin Rossdale. She quickly challenged actress Jaime King to follow suit.
Singer Demi Lovato also took the plunged and was doused with five buckets filled with water.
“I am going to donate five people because I just did five buckets,” a wet Lovato said afterwards. “They have to either pour ice on themselves or donate. But if they only donate, I think they are giant p***** and they should pour ice on themselves.”
The singer challenged boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama, along with John Taylor, Christina Perri, Madison De La Garza and Phil McIntyre.
Valderrama did the challenge with “That 70’s Show” co-star Ashton Kutcher, saying he was going to donate as well. He challenged director Robert Rodriguez.
Following suit was Lovato’s former BFF Selena Gomez, who accepted the challenge from friend Taylor Swift and Ryan Seacrest.
“American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez was challenged by soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo – who did the challenge in his underwear (why not?) – and she followed it by nominating Pitbull, Iggy Azalea and BFF Leah Remini.
Mario Lopez and wife Courtney Lopez both took the challenge as well. His “Dancing with the Stars” co-star Mark Ballas also got some cold water on him.
Actor Charlie Sheen took a different approach to the entire thing – instead of dousing himself with ice cold water, he dumped $10,000 all over him.
“Let’s face it — ice is going to melt, but this money is actually going to help people,” he said, pledging to donate it.
