How John Schneider landed the role of Bo Duke
Actor talks about 'The Dukes of Hazzard' and new show 'The Haves and the Have Nots'
He might have looked right at home behind the wheel of The General Lee, but John Schneider was not the driving pro he pretended to be in his audition for the classic TV show "The Dukes of Hazzard."
Schneider told FOX411 he lied about his New York roots and donned a Southern accent to audition for the role of Bo Duke.
"I'm actually from Mt. Kisco, New York, which is in Westchester County, and when I auditioned for 'Dukes,' I told them I was from Snailville, Georgia, which doesn't exist, and I'd just graduated first in my class from the Georgia School of High Performance Driving, which also doesn't exist," Schneider said. "But they bought it."
Schneider learned to drive the iconic Dodge Charger in the show, but to the disappointment of many fans, he admits he never jumped the car due to the dangerous nature of the stunt.
"I drove it all the time, just never got it off the ground," Schneider said. "Friends don't let friends jump cars."
Schneider is currently starring in "The Haves and the Have Nots" on the OWN Network, where he plays despicable gubernatorial candidate Jim Cryer. The show is written and produced by Tyler Perry.
"Tyler is great," Schneider said. "He's the hardest working person I've ever met."
Schneider says he and his "Dukes" co-stars still have reunions to this day.
"We're a family still, after all these years, which is very unusual," Schneider said. "Shows have a tendency to end when they're over. 'The Dukes of Hazzard' has not ended for the fans, and it has not ended for the cast or the crew and I'm very proud to be a part of that."
