Experts: 'Sex Box' reality show sounds sexy, but isn't

Reality TV is known for pushing limits. Take the upcoming WE show “Sex Box,” for example, where couples have sex in a soundproof box, then come out and talk about it with a panel of experts. While many have cited the show as the latest sign that Western Civilization is not long for this world, others think "Sex Box" is a good thing.

“I think a show like this is great because it’s starting a conversation about sex, and people need to talk about sex, understand their feelings about sex, and sex education," said Devorah Rose, editor-in-chief Social Life Magazine. "It something that’s really lacking.”

Maxim TV director Ken Shadford thinks “Sex Box,” which already airs in England, is a serious snoozefest.

“This show sounds absolutely boring. You’re not actually watching people having sex. It’s all the boring, bad parts of sex without any of the fun parts,” he explained. “The first episode might get ratings just because people are always curious about sex, however once they see the concept it’s going to fall off, and no one is going to watch.”

Rose agrees that while the show sounds sexy, it is actually anything but.

“What the audience is tuning in for, and what ‘Sex Box’ delivers is two different things," she said. "When you watch the show it’s a group of very educated panelists trying to discuss sex in a comfortable way."

One key to its success or failure? The contestants.

“Hopefully, (they'll find) good looking people," Shadford said. "I wouldn’t want to conceptualize ugly people having sex.”
