After a crop-top and miniskirt-fueled 2013, stars opted for a new approach to fashion at the Golden Globe Awards this year--  keeping their assets under wraps.

Maybe it was the gusty January winds, or the prevalence of pregnant leading ladies (Kerry Washington, Drew Barrymore, Olivia Wilde), but sleeves, high necklines, full skirts and floor-length gowns ruled the night.

Julia Roberts and Berenice Bejo both topped their dresses with business-like collars, while Caitlin FitzGerald, Zooey Deschanel and Julie Bowen took us back in time with demure, retro styles. Emma Watson's dress provided full coverage in the front, but opened up in the back... to expose that she was wearing pants underneath. Sandra Bullock, Sofia Vergara, Tina Fey and Kaley Cuoco floated down the carpet in voluminous skirts, and even Heidi Klum resisted showing off her legs (well, mostly), while Jennifer Lawrence wore a Dior sack that far from accentuated her curves.

"12 Years a Slave" actress Lupita Nyong'o led the pack in letting color do the talking, with a fiery but sophisticated red Ralph Lauren cape dress. Also in red were Watson, Taylor Swift, Amy Adams and Edie Falco, while Reese Witherspoon went for lush green, Lena Dunham for canary yellow and Kristin Chenoweth for cobalt blue.

Others used sparkle to stand out, from Wilde's long-sleeve emerald gown to Deschanel's glittery tulle skirt and beaded pumps. Mila Kunis, Kate Beckinsale and Naomi Watts frosted themselves in silver, Camila Alves opted for all-over sequins, and award-winner Elizabeth Moss looked ultra-glamorous in a sequin-embellished print.

It wasn't the most exhilarating of red carpets, but the 2014 Golden Globes taught us one thing: You don't need to take it all off to make a style statement.
