Fueds, fights and custody battles: there's never a dull day when it comes to Charlie Sheen and his ex-wives Brooke Mueller and Denise Richards.

Pictures reportedly surfaced this week showing four-year-old Bob Sheen, one of Sheen and Mueller’s twin boys, with an apparent burn on his face. The photographs are said to have been taken in during a court-granted visit with mom Mueller. And it seems the case is being made by both Sheen and his first wife, Richards, who has two daughters with the former “Two-and-a-Half Men” star, as well as legal custody over Mueller and Sheen’s twins Bob and Max, that Mueller is an unfit parent.

Richards has reportedly written a letter to DCFS (Department of Children and Family Services) that she no longer feels capable of caring for the twins, claiming that they have become out of control and violent, harming her daughters and the household animals. According to TMZ, Richards holds Mueller accountable for the bad behavior.

However, a source told FOX411 that Mueller seems to be subject to something of a smear campaign designed to sabotage her custody efforts.

"I can't imagine Denise would want to give up the boys. It seems like an ultimatum of me versus Brooke,” an inside source told FOX411, adding that Richards gets paid a significant sum of money per month to care for them.

Richards was awarded guardianship in May after Mueller, who has long suffered from substance abuse problems, was placed on a 5150 under the Californian Welfare Code following an alleged overdose of crystal methamphetamine.

But our source says Mueller's mothering may not be as bad as it seems.

"A few weeks ago, the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) granted Brooke unsupervised overnights. To get kids back, it goes through stages, things get more lenient, so they obviously saw that. She is doing really well," the insider continued. “She has a full-time sober companion that lives with her, as well as a sober coach that helps with life skills, and a full-time nanny. Brooke is really trying. She isn't perfect, but the people around her are normal, and there are  too many people around for (Brooke) to harm them."

Sheen received a blow of his own from government officials after he took DCFS to task in a TMZ Live rant, referring to agency workers as being “swayed by the evil and pathetic uber loser whore that calls herself Brooke,” and threatening a consequential “whirlwind.”

In response, Radar Online reported on Tuesday that DCFS has would no longer allow Richards to act as the court-appointed monitor for Sheen’s supervised visits with Bob and Max.

But this is not where the drama ends.

Mueller recently filed a restraining order request against Sheen, although it was rejected by the courts on Tuesday. Mueller filed the emergency petition after Sheen took to social media to slam his ex, urging her to “blow” out a grenade birthday cake candle with a photo on Twitter, calling her a “whore” and accusing her of putting their four-year-old twins Bob and Max in danger.

"It's going to get messy. Family court takes very careful steps in cases like these and they will interview everyone living with Brooke," explained alternative sentencing expert Wendy Feldman. "DCFS could then look at Denise’s own parenting and see if she's a fit parent too. And if the allegations against Brooke are proven false, could actually end up with more time. Worst case scenario is that the boys end up in foster care, but the courts generally do everything possible to keep the children close to their parents."

Experts agree that all the hoopla could have long-term ramifications on the youngsters involved.

"Children who come from broken families where both parents have had addictions will suffer long term, from possible neglect, chaos, instability, constant tension. Children of alcoholic or addicted parents usually grow up with extreme insecurity, fear, inability to trust and form meaningful, symbiotic relationships," added human behavior expert Patrick Wanis, PhD. "In this case, both parents are responsible for the health or safety of the children, and Charlie Sheen can't blame Brooke as he has not been a healthy role model either, and his instability and absence will negatively affect the children."

Reps for Sheen, Mueller and Richards all declined to comment.
