In lieu of downing shots and sipping champagne, Demi Lovato rang in her 21st birthday by giving back.

Lovato celebrated her milestone birthday on Tuesday by doing charity work in Africa with the Toronto-based youth organization Free the Children.

On Instagram, the “X Factor judge shared a picture of her working in a field along with the caption, “Thank you all for the birthday wishes!!! Having the best birthday ever in Africa with @freethechildren!!!”

While the sober starlet chose to have a low-key birthday celebration, her possible on-again ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama wanted to make sure she knew he was thinking of her.

"I've been so proud of the strength & commitment you've gained 4 life, keep inspiring us all!" the 33-year-old actor wrote on his Twitter page. "Happy birthday my @ddlovato! With & by u always."

In June when news broke that Lovato’s estranged father had died, Valderrama was her rock.

According to Hollywood Life, Valderrama was “in constant contact with her, both by text and in person, during this difficult time and he’ll continue to be her shoulder to cry on.”

While the couple supposedly called it quits for good last year after a 13-month long relationship, the two have been spotted together again in recent months.

“They have been a couple since the last X Factor, if not before then,” a source revealed earlier this summer. “He is the only guy she trusts and he is very good with dealing with her.”
