The country music icon was laid to rest on May 2 in Nashville, Tenn. Family, friends, and countless music stars all attended George’s sad but heartwarming funeral to pay their respects.
Jones is one of the most recognizable voices in the history of country music. He defined the genre for almost half a century. So it’s no surprise that at his funeral — held fittingly at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn. — , countless people gave truly touching accounts in respect of the fallen legend.
George Jones honored at beautiful funeral
It seemed that every person at the funeral had a story to tell about George — and despite the fact that he sang so many sad songs, it was the funnier moments that stuck with them. Wynona Judd waxed on specifically about his hair and his friendship. Country star Vince Gill remembered how it was George who jokingly gave him the nickname, “Sweet Pea.” “The great thing is every time someone calls me Sweet Pea, I’ll get to think about him,” Vince said.
The memorial, which featured high up guests such as Laura Bush, was nearly three hours long and featured many performances. Randy Travis sang “Amazing Grace” in George’s honor, while Brad Paisley and Kid Rock played George’s songs “Me & Jesus” and “Best of Me,” respectively.

It was a perfect way to honor the country music legend — exactly what he would have wanted. All throughout the memorial, the stars insisted that George’s legacy and indelible mark on country music would not be forgotten.
“He sang for us all,” Charlie Daniels said, “the non-stop partiers, the guys who are alone and the girl done wrong, the puppy lovers, the extrovert, the introvert and the guy at the end of the bar who never seems to go home … George had a song for everybody.”
