As the news of the Newton Connecticut elementary school spread on the web and throughout media outlets, Hollywood celebrities took to Twitter to express their thoughts on the second most deadly school shooting in history.

The shooting has left 27 people dead, including 20 children, according to the Associated Press.

The massacre occured at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, about 60 miles northeast of New York City.

A law enforcement official in Washington said the attacker, who was killed at the scene, was a 20-year-old man named Adam Lanza, whose mother was a teacher at the school and was one of the adults killed.

His brother Ryan Lanza, 24, is a suspect and is being questioned by New Jersey police. Lanza's father is alive but Adam's girlfriend is missing, according to authorities.

“My heart sinks as I hear the news of the Sandy Elementary shooting in CT…God Bless everyone and their families!!!” Eva Longoria posted on her Twitter account on Friday.

Fellow Latina actress Victoria Justice was also overwhelmed with emotions after hearing the tragic news.

“Today is a very sad day… words cannot express the sadness I feel for Newton, Conn. and for all the families that have been affected,” wrote the “Fun Size” actress.

Other celebrities were also mortified by the news.

“This is absolutely horrifying. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families in Newton, CT. So unbelievably sad,” wrote Lindsay Lohan.

“In total shock over the school shooting in CT! 18 children shot dead & 9 adults by a father of one of the kids! What has this world come to,” posted Kim Kardashian.

The shooting is the latest mass violent incident in a year that in recent days saw a deadly mall shooting in Oregon, and months ago a gunman opened fire in a suburban Colorado movie theater that killed about a dozen. Both gunmen are in their 20's. The Oregon shooter killed himself after killing two other people.

A law enforcement official in Washington said Adam Lanza has been identified as the shooter.

Lanza, 20, was killed at the scene had apparent ties to the school and used a .223-caliber rifle during the killing spree. His mother worked at the school and police were searching a location in Hoboken, New Jersey, where his father lives.
