'Wilfred' star opens up about the perils of wearing a dog suit, what's in store for season two

Actor Jason Gann said getting out of his dog suit is a welcome respite from his role on the FX show, “Wilfred.”

The actor and executive producer stopped by the Fox411 studios to chat about the show, which also stars Elijah Wood, and said he is happy to be out of the dog suit, for now.

“I’m excited because I just got out of the dog suit,” he said. “I was in it for three months and I’ve been loving getting some sun and going to the gym and getting something of a life back. But it’s sometimes not a lot of fun getting in and out of that dog suit.”

“It drives me insane,” he said. “But when I watch the edit, it makes it all worth it.”

The show was FX’s most watched comedy launch in network history and focuses on a depressed young man, played by Wood, who is entrusted with caring for his neighbor’s dog. But while the world sees the dog as an animal, Wood’s character sees the dog as a man in a dogsuit.

“The character I think really has an appeal to animal lovers and dog lovers in particular, they tend to love hearing what a dog may be thinking if it had a human voice,” he said. For the show’s second year, Gann said he tries to find “dogisms” or canine behavior to articulate in a funny, human form.

“We see a few different sides of Wilfred,” he said of season two. “We see more of what Wilfred wants to do this year. There may be some dancing.”

“Wilfred’s” special season preview episode aired Thursday and season two officially kicks off on FX on June 28 at 10 p.m.
