It’s a battle of the 1980s superstars on the Billboard 200 chart as Madonna and Lionel Richie go head to head.
Madonna scored her eigth number one album with the debut of “MDNA.” But in his biggest album release since 1986, Richie came in second place with his country duet album “Tuskegee.”
“MDNA” sold 359,000 copies in its first week, according to Billboard and the success makes it her fifth straight album and eighth overall. Her last number one album was 2008’s “Hard Candy.”
Madonna is currently in second place among women with the most number one albums, surpassed only by Barbara Streisand.
Richie’s “Tuskegee” sold 199,000 units, which was his best in Soundscan history.
The last time Richie was higher was in 1986 when his song “Dancing on the Ceiling” spent two weeks at number one.
